With the ability to edit utility line attributes, Admins and Project Owners can now update and manage utility line data directly in 4M. This transforms 4M into a dynamic workspace where your team can collaborate, update, and share up-to-date project data in real time.

Who can edit attributes?

Only users with the following permissions can edit utility line attributes:

  • Admins

  • Project Owners

  • Custom roles with Attribute Editing permissions

This ensures edits are controlled and only made by the right people.

How to Edit Utility Line Attributes

Navigate to the Layers tab in your project. Click the 3 dots next to the Filter button on the Foundation or Validated Data layer, and select “Line Attributes.” The Utility Summary Table will pop up at the bottom of your screen. From here, you can:

  • View all utility lines and objects in one centralized, searchable table. Utility objects (like valves and manholes) are included but shown as read-only.

  • Click “Edit Table” in the top right corner of the table to update existing attributes (e.g., change the Material of a utility line).

  • Edit attributes from the predefined 4M fields bank. Predefined fields include:

    • Utility Sector

    • Sub-Sector

    • Utility Owner

    • Elevation

    • Installation Date

    • Material

    • *The Size and Depth fields are customizable by numeric entry.

  • Perform edits across single or multiple utility lines in the table. A user can edit one cell at a time, but multiple edits can be made before clicking "Save Changes."

  • To save the edits to 4M, click the “Save Changes” button on the top right of the table.

After saving your edits, you can then see real-time updates on the map when style-driven fields (like Sector) are changed.

To export data to CSV for sharing with teammates, clients, or external systems, click the download icon in the top right corner of the table.

The last edit will automatically be logged by the user and date in the “Modified By” and "Modified At” fields in the table. Additionally, the last person who edited the data will be shown at the upper part of the table, near the "Edit Table" button.

Things to Know About the Utility Summary Table:

  • Attribute editing applies only to utility lines (objects are view-only). You can click the name of the table in the top left corner to toggle between the lines and object tables on your project.

  • Only fields from the 4M fields bank can be added.

    • Free-form attributes, custom naming, or renaming are not supported at this time.

  • Edit history/versioning is not yet available—only the most recent changes are saved.

  • To view each line’s location on the map, click “Zoom” in the second column to navigate to the line.

With the ability to edit utility line attributes, you now have:

  • Centralized view – Manage all utility attributes in one searchable, exportable table.

  • Faster decisions – Update and compare attributes without digging into individual records.

  • Collaboration-ready – Ensure your team is always working with the most up-to-date data.

  • Role-based control – Permissions protect data integrity while enabling the right users to collaborate.
